At the Bernie Goodwin
oval at Morisset on the 21st of December, the Christmas festive
cheer was all around at the Southlake Christmas Spectacular- 2013. MAD Dancing
was already underway from the beginning of the day upon the stage. First off at
5:30pm near the Art2264 Morisset PCYC marquee was a drum workshop with ‘The
Rhythm Hut’. Drums of all sizes arranged in a circle invited people of all ages
to join in. Smaller drums kept in time with the bigger bassier drums, creating
bass (the middle) and tones (the edge) depending on where the drum was hit. From
6:30pm was poi twirling practice with ‘Bec and Tangles’, using hand eye
coordination to spin and twirl slightly weighted strings, attempting to perform
simple tricks.‘Bec and Tangles’ then
showed us a fire twirling demonstration at 8:00pm with their fire pois in front
of the main stage, the pois dancing like fireflies against the dark night sky.
The Mirrabooka band played Christmas carols like “Jingle Bells” on stage in the
background. Colouring in stickers and Christmas decoration activities were
available in the PCYC marquee facilitated by local rising talent, Lillian Webb.
At 9pm, the Christmas event ended with a
bang… literally! The sky was lit up with colourful Fireworks of all colours. There
was even a surprise visit from Santa! Overall at the event there were fun activities
for all ages to enjoy.
Art2264
is going to be part of the annual Southlake Christmas Spectacular, this year to be held at the Bernie Goodwin Oval from 5pm- 9pm on Newcastle St. in Morisset (on the soccer oval behind Coles
and next to High School).
The art2264
program starts up near the Morisset PCYC marquee at 5:30pm with a Djembe Drumming Workshop by The Rhythm Hut. A
Djembe drum is a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum, which is played with bare
hands. Everyone loves to drum, so join in the fun with our famous drum circle! See Below photos- The 2012 Art2264 Christmas Spectacular.

Bec & Tangles Twirling Workshop
Next from
6:30pm we have a twirling workshop from ‘Bec and Tangles’ who will teach you
the basics of fire twirling (but without the fire). If you’ve ever wondered how
they make it look so effortless, come down and give it a try. You won't get burnt!

that watching fire twirling is amazing and I can’t wait to actually be part of
the action!” journalist and enthusiast for art2264, Bernadette Gambrill said.
A craft corner will be held under the giant PCYC Marquee with local artist, Shelley Moses.
The last
(but certainly not the least!) art2264 activity is a demonstration
fire-twirling act by ‘Bec and Tangles’ for 15 minutes. They will perform next to the main stage from around 8pm at twilight, so be sure not to miss
this fantastic performance!
The
evening will end with a bang! Be prepared for the night sky to light up with
colours and sparkles with the 9pm fireworks display.
Tickets
to the Christmas Spectacular cost $2 per person or $10 per car. There is
also a great deal on the rides- $10 for a pass to ALL the rides! All of the art2264
activities are free once you are inside the showground. Bring the whole family
for a great time. Be sure to be there because it is going to be truly
spectacular!
