"Twisting by the Pool" Report by Bernadette Gambrill (images from the event)
On Saturday the 22nd
of February, 2014, the community of Morisset came together to have some fun and
Twist by the Pool. The weather at Morisset pool was cool and cloudy and
children were already having fun in the water as the event began at 3PM. First
up, was a special display of synchronised swimming with the Central Coast Crystal
girls. Then began the synchronised swimming workshop with Naomi Emerson, allowing
participation of the visitors to learn synchronised movements in the water.
This was done to the music of the high energy the ‘Kahibah Brass” band. They
played such songs as “The Pink Panther” theme, “Superstitious” and others from
the past. At 4:30PM began a short aerobics class facilitated by Morisset
Swimming Centre, moving and working out to the band music for some fun and
fitness. The Rotary Club of Morisset, held a fundraiser sausage sizzle for the
PCYC, with tea and coffee, cool drinks and yummy sausage sandwiches to have
after an afternoon of swimming. To find out more about Rotary, see their
website: http://www.morissetrotary.org.au/. The event ended with a big splash at
5PM in the afternoon, with towels around shoulders and smiles upon all faces.
Join the Art2264@morissetpcyc program this SUMMER at Morisset Swim Centre to celebrate "Twisting by the Pool" on Saturday 22 February from 3-5pm.
On Saturday 22nd of February, ‘art2264@morissetpcyc’

pool, like live musical entertainment from renown local band, “Kahibah Funky
Brass”, a Synchronised Swimming Display and Workshop by the Olympic acclaimed “Central
Coast Crystals”, an Aqua Aerobics Class from our popular local tutor and room
for some ‘twist moves by the pool’ from local dancers keen to swing their hips
- ALL to the live grooves and beats of hits from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and later.
Last year the Art2264 program hosted the inaugural
“Swim under Stars” event where many brave locals came to experience the
art2264 program at the 25 metre heated pool AT NIGHT (in the rain)!
This year, we’re celebrating IN THE SUNSHINE, with
music, dance and aquatic activities. We invite visitors to bring along their
picnic blankets to enjoy the free entertainment and pool activities. Normal
pool entry will apply, with a sausage sizzle hosted by Morisset Rotary Club (who
has been supporting the Morisset community since 1967) available for a modest
fee.
The event starts at 3pm with an awesome synchronised
swimming display and workshop from 3:30pm where you can learn cool aquatic skills
you can show your friends. If you love dancing and water, then this one is for
you! From 4.30pm is the Aqua Aerobics class, which features water workouts for everyone
(giving the same benefits of weights, aerobics and stretching all in one class).
Whilst all that is going on, “Kahibah Funky Brass” will play along with the
activities. Join in and Dance by the pool, ‘swinging’ along to some all-time
hits like “let’s twist again”, “pink
panther”, “shake, rattle and roll”, “see you later alligator”,
“superstition” and more! Of course, you can always just turn up have an
enjoyable swim!
Come along and bring the whole family- you will be
sure to have a great time. Spread your picnic blanket, meet friends, become a
superstar Synchronised Swimmer, get fit with Aqua Aerobics, dance by the pool with
your community or just hang around with friends and “Twist by the Pool”… The Art2264 program is hosted by Morisset PCYC &
funded by the New South Wales Government.

Art2264@morissetpcyc has been running since October
2011, when it launched at the newly opened Morisset PCYC. The program was
initially developed in 2010 by local Artists Margrete Erling and Helen Hopcroft
of the Morisset Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, who together approached John
Mills, Manager at Lake Macquarie PCYC (and acting Manager of Morisset PCYC at
the time) to support the concept in its funding bid and roll out the new
program when the Morisset Centre Launched.
Erling & Hopcroft in collaboration with Lake
Macquarie PCYC, successfully secured funding for 3 years from the NSW State
Government through its Community Builders Program. Since then, the program has
hosted 28 arts events at Morisset PCYC and within the local area. “Twisting by
the Pool” will be the final event coordinated by Margrete Erling (of Artevents
Training & Development based in Mandalong). The Art2264@morissetpcyc
program is moving over to be coordinated by Morisset PCYC until the end of
2014.
