"Visual Arts Palette": Report by Bernadette Gambrill
On Friday the 15th of November, 2013, the community of Morisset came together to experience some Creative Expression at theArt2264@morissetPCYC ‘Visual Arts Palette’. Three workshops ran throughout the afternoon and evening. First at 4:30PM: Margrete from Yara Balba Art Studio facilitated a ‘Giant Draw in’. This included drawing portraits of each other through unique artistic methods. Each person sat in view of the other, drawing ‘blind’ (without looking) and making continuous line drawings of each other. At 5:30PM Shelley Moses’ Puppet Show and Puppet Making Demonstration began. Her Puppet Characters - namely ‘Angus’,’ Patience’, ‘Eddie’ and other friends - regularly appear in her work within aged care and educational facilities.
Handmade Puppets in the workshop were made from feathers, foam,
googly eyes, material, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, pins, and rubber bands –
just to name a few things. Next up was fabric print-making workshop with Nina
Angelo running at the same time. Designs of imagination were drawn onto a piece
of paper and carefully cut out. The
designs were then placed over fabric, flooded with colourful fabric paint and
dried; presenting a creative print of artwork. Snacks on the day included sausage
rolls and cupcakes from Busy Baking. At the end of the day, everyone went home
with their own colourful homemade puppet, crazy portrait drawings and fabric
designs – a unique expression of creativity and individuality.

Art2264 brings the Visual Arts to Morisset PCYC with a Splash!
Three amazing arts workshops will be held over the afternoon, starting with the "GIANT DRAW IN" drawing workshop for all at 4.30pm, followed by concurrent workshops from 5.30pm in "PUPPET MAKING" and "FABRIC PRINTING"! Bring Your Own T-shirt or pillow slip to give fabric printing a go! Watch a small puppet display then make your own! From 4.30- 5.30pm, join in the fun with Margrete's "GIANT DRAW IN", where everyone is armed with a pencil and gets to learn some fun and interactive skills in making portraits of each other. No previous experience required but a 'can do' and sense of humour in participants goes a long way! Students get to keep their work and maybe use them for ideas in the fabric printing workshop after. FABRIC PRINTING WORKSHOP 5.30-7.30pm
From 5.30pm join talented Central Coast Artist Nina Angelo, as she shows you the ropes in screen-printing on fabric.A
fun and creative workshop using fabric printing and stencil techniques to cut
and print images or messages on your T Shirts, pillow cases or on fabric
squares which can be used for flags, cushions and more. Nina is a community artist who is well known on the Central Coast and across Australia for her fabric printing skills and community capacity building.
PUPPET MAKING WORKSHOP 5.30- 7.30pm
Also from 5.30pm, local artist Shelley Moses will bring some of her puppets to show, then learn how to make your own simple rod puppet, with the materials supplied. The workshop is suitable for all ages. Shelley returns again after teaching this workshop with Art2264 in 2012. See what YOU can create!
Shelley Moses left her teaching career to become a professional puppeteer. In 1984, she founded her own theatre company in Canberra called “ Skylark Theatre” and toured nationally and internationally, performing for people of all ages. Shelley was fortunate to be trained by and work with Jim Henson, the creator of the muppets. She believes that puppets are a powerful tool for communication. Shelley has introduced the use of puppets in Aged Care as well as education. She now runs workshops for teachers, counsellors and aged –care workers in making puppets and how to use them effectively in their workplace.
